Founded in
1999, the Cornwall Historical Society has made considerable
progress, gaining nearly 200 members and establishing a headquarters
and museum in the Cornwall Town Hall, thanks to the cooperation of
the Supervisor and the Town Board.
The Society
has a three-fold purpose: to acquaint the residents of Cornwall with
our rich cultural heritage; to identify and help preserve worthy old
buildings in the community; and to encourage the donation of
historical items to Cornwall and provide for their proper storage
and opportunity for public inspection.
Our museum
in Town Hall is an avenue to display the historic items that we have
acquired and provide a meeting place for those interested in
acquiring a first-hand look at Cornwall’s storied past.
We present informative programs, hold dinner events for members
and friends,
organize the popular Wine and Cheese Event at Storm King Lodge,
participate in Cornwall’s Street Fair, the Independence Day
Celebration and River Fest.
In September
2002, we placed a memorial bench near the Chadeayne Traffic Circle
to honor victims of September 11, 2001. We also dedicated a Town of
Cornwall Honor Roll to the men and women of WWII from Cornwall in deep
appreciation for their services in defense of our country. The wall
is on display in our museum.
